WireGuard fits in 4,000 lines of code (versus 400,000 for OpenVPN), can be audited in an afternoon, and above all is built into the Linux kernel: encryption happens in kernel space, at hardware speed. On our 10 Gbps network, WireGuard easily saturates a 1 Gbps fiber connection — our measurements: 940 Mbps of useful throughput (ChaCha20), where OpenVPN caps at 200-300 Mbps.
